# Identity Theft Report to a Lender
Date: 19 October 2026
Legal context: England and Wales - fictional worked example; overseas acceptance must be checked where relevant
Parties and reference: Victim: Maya Grant, 7 Example Terrace, Oxford. To fraud team, Example Credit Ltd, 18 Example Finance Square, London. Disputed account ending 0417, reference EXAMPLE-ID-1010; alleged balance £3,200.
## 1. Account disputed and discovery
A credit-report alert on 9 October 2026 showed an account apparently opened with you on 22 September and a balance of £3,200. I did not apply for, authorise, use or benefit from this account, and did not permit another person to apply in my name. My actual address is the one above; the application reportedly used a different delivery address. I notified your published fraud contact on 10 October and received the reference above. This letter does not acknowledge the alleged debt or agree a repayment plan.
## 2. Immediate protection and secure investigation
Please block further use of the disputed account, prevent new borrowing and preserve the application, authentication, delivery and transaction evidence. Mark liability as disputed and ask any collection agent to pause collection while you investigate, without treating my fraud report as proof of default. Please explain a secure, proportionate way to verify identity; I will not send passwords, one-time codes or unredacted identity records to an unverified email address. Contact details in the suspicious application must not replace my independently verified contact record.
## 3. Reports and evidence
I enclose the relevant redacted credit-report extract, your correspondence and a chronology. I reported suspected identity fraud through Report Fraud on 12 October; EXAMPLE-RF-1012 is a fictional report reference, not a police finding that a named person committed an offence. Report Fraud replaced Action Fraud for England, Wales and Northern Ireland before this 2026 example. I am checking my other credit files and considering Cifas Protective Registration; registration is not a guarantee against fraud and does not itself decide this dispute. I do not know who made the application.
## 4. Corrective action requested
After investigation, please confirm the fraud conclusion, close any unauthorised account and confirm I owe no liability for borrowing not attributable to me. Correct inaccurate account, arrears and default data with each credit-reference agency to which it was supplied and confirm what was corrected. Do not indiscriminately remove accurate protective or lawful fraud-prevention records, or promise that a court judgment can be deleted by a lender alone. If you dispute my account, explain the evidence and review route without disclosing another person's protected information.
## 5. Response and escalation
Please acknowledge promptly and give an update by 2 November 2026, a requested date rather than a universal statutory resolution deadline. If unresolved, treat the matter as a formal complaint and explain the applicable Financial Ombudsman Service route and time limits; data accuracy concerns may also be raised with the ICO. Neither body guarantees compensation and a complaint does not suspend court deadlines. I reserve the right to dispute any proceedings and seek advice immediately if served. Signed Maya Grant, 19 October 2026; maya.grant@example.com, subject to independent verification.
